Simplifying the Punt…

Prostitution is a derogatory term, an “Evil” word, and also “the world’s oldest profession”.

Our wonderful Wikipedia would call “Prostitution” the business or practice of providing sexual services to another person in return for payment.

Many countries have made prostitution illegal, but the laws seem quite loose that one can work their way around these laws. Therein comes the escort industry, which says that the monetary payment is for time, and anything that happens during that time is between the consenting adults.

So you could say that an escort could be anybody willing to be a partner of another, for a period, an hour, a night, a weekend, for a fee. The sexual activities are merely bonuses.

No different than a weekend getaway with a mistress….shunned by society, but by all means legal.

Let’s have a look at the standard dating world. Two consenting adults decide to go for dinner or some activity, and they decide to spend time together. After some time, they may decide to go to one another’s residence, or to a hotel, and they may engage in a sexual activity. This is perfectly legal. The only monetary effect may be the purchase of the meal. This is 100% perfectly legal. Now in the case of sugar daddies, or sugar mommies in some cases, the payment is not explicitly implied, but the “sugar daddy” may pay for the rent or some cost, or even provide financial support of his sexual prospective, who is usually much younger. The girl is not seen as a sex worker, but merely as an immoral girl. It’s all in secret however.

South Africa has a number of these setups, of young girls living in complex apartments with their rent and monthly expenses paid by an elder sugar daddy who visits them for sex. But the debate there is for another time. What I would like to discuss is about the escort industry.

I came upon the industry while looking for a girl to dance for a friend’s bachelor party, and I must say my research yielded a world I never knew existed. I am currently working on a book, and a particular character is to experience this world and to get an understanding of the world, I did a little bit of further research.

There are many websites that provide escort services, or websites for advertisers in the escort industry, but what surprised me was the professionalism that comes into these websites. Two websites that interested me…and I found myself spending more time than I should on them…were www.esa.co.za (Escort South Africa) and then www.escortgps.xxx (Escort GPS, but the South Africa region).

I was expecting to see tatty websites, with mish-mash functionality and poorly uploaded pictures. No, these sites maintain high-quality pictures with good lighting, and legitimate well-structured information, with surprisingly good user experiences on…and possibly off…the site.

They even contain search engines to filter through the advertisers. Advertisers being the girls ofcourse…or boys…or she-males. Most websites will have the contact number or email address of the advertiser, then offcourse a picture to draw the customer in.

One of the things that surprised me was some of the search criteria on Escort GPS. This is South Africa, but some of the criteria included the following:

  • Inter-racial: Smart to have this as it eliminates any confusion or possible disappointment for a customer upon arriving at destination armed with coin.
  • “O” – Level: which is oral sex
  • DFK – Deep French Kissing: Not sure what happens here, or its difference from smooching…
  • Extra-Ball: which means having sex multiple times, possibly in the selected time
  • Rimming: which means licking of the anus
  • OWO: Oral Without Condom – are they serious?
  • Hourly Rate: also reflects class of advertiser.

I found it strange to see such “skills” or “services” detailed in such bullet point manner, and used as search criteria, however, it is a profession isn’t it.

Some advertises merely massage and don’t go the full way, but if they do, they would indicate that they offer “FH”, which is full-house. I had a bit of fun by calling a number of these advertisers and “interviewing” them with questions like;

“How much for full-house?”

“Do you entertain African gentlemen?”

“If I am finished in five minutes, what do we do with the rest of the time?”

“How do you protect yourself from HIV/AIDS?”

And they all were happy to answer these questions, albeit still trying to speak like a call girl so as to entice. Some will cut the phone once questions become too much, some would continue, and I noticed that there was a direct relation between hourly rate and attitude. The cheaper ones seemed more forthcoming, then the +R2000 per hour generally did not have any time to chat on the phone and seemed annoyed. One girl who I asked how she protects herself from disease mentioned that her rate “filtered the rubbish”. It was amusing.

Escort GPs has a very interesting filter and search mechanism, but ESA has a very professional design, a very “purple site”, something the patrons seem to call it, even when referring in calls. What intrigued me about ESA was its Forum functionality.

Yes…the site hosts these for a, complete with discussion functionalities. The customers sign-up and log on and have maintained profiles. These revellers call themselves “Punters”, which seems to be the term used across the industry.

The site also has venue and advertiser reviews written by the punters, all following a specific structure. These are similar to video-game review sites, where gamers review sound, graphics, gameplay and story, these punters review face, body, telephone manner, venue, personal cleanliness, privacy and service! All with scores out of 5!

Personal cleanliness…

These are the attributes that the punters are after. What is hilarious are the actual qualitative reviews. Telephone manner seems to also relate to service, as they speak of being “rushed” or refer to the advertisers as “clock watchers”. There are some that mention “bareback”, and upon further reading comments I then realised this meant that they actually, for a certain price, allow sex without a condom! Dangerous…

The punters all seem like a close hidden community in how they discuss the advertisers. At times the advertisers also respond in the forum to either dispute a negative review, or acknowledge feedback for a better experience later, or some merely to thank a punter for a positive review.  The comments and questions may be on how the advertiser treated them, whether she/he offers refreshments, and whether the pictures on the site are reflective of the actual person. It seems there is some misrepresentation, from an age perspective on the sites. Where the picture and age are when one was say 25 years old, but the actual advertiser in person is now 40 years old! So the community provide themselves pointers, warnings, give high scores to those who have most honest representation or best personalities. Some are quite race averse indicating whether to avoid an advertiser who also entertains black men, giving higher scores to the “strictly white” advertisers…though the race of the advertiser is unimportant.

There are little stories buried in these reviews though, from how the whole visit began, the phone call, and the activities they engaged in. I always harbour this hidden concern that one might visit a house and be drugged, only to wake up in a bathroom with no kidney or something, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

The site even allocates badges to some of the members. The badges range from “New Member”, “5 year Member”, “Reliable Punter”, “Gold Member” including what is called the “Wicked Wednesday”, which is awarded to the top punter on a particular Wednesday once a month. This “WW” prize may be as valuable as a 40” HD Television. I don’t actually know how they get this prize to the winner though, as I am under the impression the site is discreet.

All in all, it seems the profession has taken on technology and pushed it to enhance the industry. All along with social media as well, in the form of these fora and chats.

Illegal or legal, it is all impressive, but unfortunately on the darker side of hedonism. Anyway, my research was limited to phone calls and what is available on the internet. Maybe “personal visits” could yield more interesting information on the industry, but there is always the danger of being pulled in while researching, so lets keep it digital for now…

Now…to read some punter reviews….
